PARENT PLUS WORKSHOP

Since 2014, JFS has presented Parent Plus workshops to assist parents with children in all age groups to become better parents and forge positive relationships with their children. This innovative program was inspired by the work of both Dr. John Gottman and the Tuning Into Kids Program. It uses a 5-step method that builds emotional intelligence and creates positive, long lasting effects for children. Easy to learn, and used by parents, educators and care-givers, it supports kids through life’s ups and downs in a way that builds confidence and helps them grow socially, emotionally and intellectually.

Amy Edwards, JFS Clinical Mental Health Counselor, has been teaching this course to parents and educators since 2014. The free six-week class consists of once-weekly 90-minute sessions where parents meet together virtually in a small group to learn about this method and put it into practice. “It helps kids develop skills to become better at self-regulation,” Edwards said. “Self-regulation in children leads to better outcomes academically and socially.”

“This program really helps us understand our feelings about feelings,” she explained. When parents understand how they are feeling, they can support their children in dealing with their own feelings. Edwards used the example of anger, which can be tricky to deal with in a child, but through this program, parents learn how not bringing in their own issues allows them to be a more effective parent. “You learn not to problem solve for them, but be with them in the moment so they can learn to problem solve,” she explained.

This fosters a sense of connection between parent and child, which is important throughout their development, especially in adolescence, where adults feel the most disconnected from their children.

In addition to learning this approach to parenting, Edwards points out that in the small-group setting where there is safety in sharing, parents learn they are not alone in their struggles. “I see parents who see how hard it is and learn that they are not broken. They hear that from the other parents and see they are not alone in it.”

Edwards has seen the positive effects of this training for parents over the years and calls it “almost miraculous.” “Even if one parent learns the techniques and uses them 40% of the time, you still see positive effects on the children.”
