As the cost of living continues to rise, many individuals, especially those on fixed incomes, find themselves facing difficult financial decisions. One such individual is a disabled veteran who recently found himself in a heartbreaking predicament - having to choose between paying his utility bill or his medical bill.
After a one-time medical emergency left him with a hefty bill, John* made the choice to pay off the medical bill and not pay his utilities. After getting four months behind, he was threatened with an imminent shut off.
With the help of JFS and our Client Advocate, Sofia Rominger, John was able to get caught up on his utility bill, avoiding the risk of having his utilities shut off. This not only provided immediate relief, but also restored a sense of dignity and security to John, who remains very grateful for JFS’ assistance in a time of need.
John’s story is just one example of the impossible choices many of our clients are forced to make every day. Many of our clients live paycheck to paycheck and are often forced to make tough decisions between feeding themselves and their children, paying rent, seeking mental health support, and improving the quality of life of an aging family member. Life is a constant balancing act, with every dollar counting, every decision carrying weight, and every sacrifice deeply felt. We appreciate our community of supporters, who contribute to JFS so we can continue to help others, so they don’t have to make such painful decisions.
