Solutions to Senior Hunger - New (FREE) Program Launch!

Jewish Family Service is very pleased to announce our newest program, launched in 2016: Solutions to Senior Hunger. JFS is honored to be one of 13 states around the country chosen to participate in this initiative administered by MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. Rosemary Quatrale is JFS’s new Senior Adult Nutrition Outreach Coordinator, who will manage the Solutions to Senior Hunger program in Utah, identifying low income seniors 50+ and assisting them in enrolling in the Food Stamps program. This FREE and confidential service is available to anyone regardless of background or denomination in Salt Lake, Wasatch, and Summit Counties.

Too many seniors have only enough funds to cover either food or medical expenses - a very tough position to be in. Applying for benefits can be a humbling and overwhelming task, and not all adults are computer literate. This is where JFS can help. Our specialist provides a free service to help people 50 and older determine eligibility for the Food Stamps program. Please note, our specialist acts as liaison between clients and government agencies, but does not determine the outcome of benefits.

These benefits come in the form of a discreet Horizon Assistance debit card, which helps Utahns buy healthy food at almost all grocery stores and food retailers - even farmers' markets! Older adults are the least likely population to be enrolled in this federal assistance program, with only 40% of eligible individuals participating. With the average benefit per person in Utah in 2014 being $114/month, this program is worth looking into. We provide assistance with dignity and privacy. Our mission is to help put an end to unnecessary food insecurity and improve nutrition amongst seniors in Utah. Help is available - applying made easy!
